A tragic event has occurred in the US state of Louisiana, where a gunman killed eight children and injured several others during a series of attacks on several apartments in the city of Shreveport, local police announced.
According to authorities, a total of 10 people were shot, with victims ranging in age from 1 to about 14. Two adults were also injured in the shooting.
Police said the shooter was later shot dead by officers. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith described the scene as "something that has never been seen before."
The incident occurred in three different locations and authorities have described it as a case of domestic violence. According to police spokesman Chris Bordelon, some of the children killed are suspected to be relatives of the perpetrator.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the conflict began early Sunday morning, when the perpetrator opened fire, acting alone. He then attempted to flee in a stolen vehicle, but was pursued and shot by police.
Authorities in Louisiana have appealed for anyone with images, videos or information about the incident to submit them to investigative authorities.
Shreveport is the third largest city in the state of Louisiana and is located near the border with Texas.
