The Mexican government has arrested a suspected drug trafficker on the European Union's "most wanted" list. He is Janos Balla, a Hungarian national who uses the alias "Daniel Takacs."

Janos Balla was arrested in the southern state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, and was one of the people wanted by Interpol for distributing narcotics and psychotropic substances. In a statement by Mexico's Security Minister, Omar Garcia Harfuch, it is said that this person had been sentenced to six years in prison in the European Union and had an international arrest warrant from Interpol.

Through a coordinated operation by Mexican and Hungarian security agencies, he was located and arrested on a well-known street in the city of Benito Juarez, in Playa del Carmen. After his arrest, he was taken to Mexico's National Migration Institute, where his migratory status will be reviewed and the deportation process to Europe will begin.

The arrest is part of a broader strategy by the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has decided to pursue a tougher approach against drug traffickers and organized crime groups. Sheinbaum has distanced herself from the “hugs, not bullets” policy of her predecessor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and has announced a new campaign with joint efforts with the United States to combat the cartels.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized cartels in Mexico, calling for tougher measures. In response, the Sheinbaum administration has pointed to a significant increase in the arrests of high-profile criminals, such as the Jalisco New Generation cartel leader El Mencho, who was killed in February.

As part of security measures for events such as the 2026 World Cup, Sheinbaum has stated that up to 100,000 security personnel will be deployed on the streets of Mexico to ensure order and safety during the sporting event.

Although there has been criticism for sending cartel members to the US without extradition orders, the Mexican government defends these actions, saying they are necessary for national security and are carried out with respect for Mexico's sovereignty.
