The euphoria lasted only a few hours. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz again, restoring conditional passage monitored by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

The Iranian state news agency IRIB said the cause was the United States blockade, which continued despite measures to facilitate passage through Tehran.

Many oil-laden ships trying to export Gulf oil were turned back after Revolutionary Guard units blocked their passage. Tehran said only a limited number of ships had passed through since Friday, when free passage was restored.

Separately, at least two merchant ships reported being hit by gunfire while trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, three maritime security and shipping sources said, shortly after Iran said it was tightening control of the waterway again.

Earlier maritime trackers showed a convoy of eight tankers passing through the strait, in the first major movement of ships since the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran seven weeks ago.

But Iran then said it was restoring strict military controls on the vital waterway, the pre-war waterway through which about a fifth of global oil trade passed, while the US continued its blockade of Iranian ports.

And in a defiant message posted on his Telegram channel, Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said Iran's navy was ready to inflict "new bitter defeats" on its enemies.

The Iranian presidential spokesman said on Friday that the opening of the canal was proof of how committed the opposing side was to advancing peace efforts.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who first announced the decision, said the strait would remain open until Tuesday, when the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran expires.

US President Donald Trump called it a great day and thanked Iran. However, in a series of tweets on the X network, the White House chief said that the US blockade of Hormuz will remain in place until a full agreement is reached with Iran.

Trump expressed optimism that there would be further talks mediated by Pakistan this weekend, however, there has been no movement in this direction yet.
