US President Donald Trump said Vice President JD Vance will not lead the US delegation to the new round of talks with Iran in Pakistan due to security reasons.
"It's just for security reasons. JD is great," Trump said in an interview with ABC News, explaining that the Secret Service had not been able to provide the necessary security measures in time for the trip to Islamabad.
However, in a later statement, the White House announced that Vance is expected to participate in the talks, leaving his ultimate role in the delegation unclear.
Earlier in the day, US officials had indicated that he would lead the negotiations. In the previous round in Islamabad, Vance was accompanied by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Iran, on the other hand, has not yet officially confirmed its participation in the new talks, however, according to sources, the Iranian delegation is expected to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday. It could include key figures such as Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani.
Sources close to the negotiations say that a symbolic declaration is expected to extend the ceasefire, while if developments proceed positively, a high-level meeting between the presidents of the US and Iran is not ruled out, with the possibility of signing a joint agreement in Islamabad.
