An operation to save about 160 whales ended with partial success as teams managed to return most of the trapped mammals to the sea. Rescue teams conducted the operation at Dunsborough Beach in Australia to take care of the whales.

"You can see how the whales were trapped. I have never seen such a sight on this scale," said Ian Wiese, chairman of the Geographe Marine Research group, which was involved in today's rescue operation.

In total, 130 whales were returned to sea after a total of 160 were stranded on the beach, according to Western Australia's Parks and Wildlife Service department. However, at least 28 whales died.

“My initial reaction to seeing hundreds of whales all huddled together on the beach was completely overwhelming. It was really chaotic. However, the end result was good news," he said.

Scientists have previously said that beached whales have a low survival rate at sea and can only survive for about six hours on land before they begin to deteriorate.

"When they're at sea, in deep water, there's nothing to worry them, but if an injured whale ends up close to shore, there's going to be a lot of danger."

Experienced veterinarians were also present at the rescue of the creatures, who tried to save as many whales as possible.
