The 58-year-old, according to CNN, is the owner of a small construction company.
He was arrested a day ago after allegedly trying to kill the former president.
Trump opponent: A frequent critic of Trump on social media, Routh posted on X about the assassination of the former president in July, encouraging President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to visit the wounded. "Trump will never do anything," Routh wrote.
North Carolina ties: Routh registered as a voter in the state in 2012. He also voted in North Carolina's Democratic primary in March of this year, according to public records.
Run-ins with the law: Routh was arrested in 2002 and allegedly put his hand on a firearm before barricading himself in a business. He has also been accused by state and federal authorities of failing to pay taxes on time.
Support for Ukraine: Routh expressed support for Ukraine in dozens of X posts in 2022, saying he was willing to die fighting and that "we should burn the Kremlin to the ground." He also visited Ukraine in 2022, according to videos and photos obtained by CNN. In a series of Facebook posts last year, he tried to encourage Afghan recruits to fight, posing as a liaison for the Ukrainian government.
Homebuilder: Routh said on his LinkedIn page that he started a company in 2018 called Camp Box Honolulu in Hawaii, which builds storage units and tiny homes. An op-ed in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser said he donated a structure to homeless people.
His son, Oran Routh, said there was no way his father would do such a "crazy, much less violent" thing.
He called his father "loving, caring and an honest and hardworking man".
