In addition to organized crime and "foreign hands", Edi Rama has also included the Antifa movement as part of the international network behind the violence and protests in Albania.
Although there is no public evidence that this movement has coordinated the protests in the Albanian capital, the prime minister declared in his latest statement that the organization data of this group is in the hands of the police.
"The escalation has been prepared for several months. The data on the introduction of masks, explosives and so on into Albania, through customs and by certain entities, are already in the hands of the police. The data on the organization of groups as part of the ANTIFA network, the urban terror network that in the name of neo-communism has decided to enter people's lives through violence, are in the hands of the police. But in the hands of the police are also some of the participants in this violence directly financed by organized crime and foreign forces," Rama said, among other things.
Role in social networks
Instagram, Telegram, and WhatsApp are used by protesters to distribute information, organize meetings, and mobilize participants.
Images posted on Instagram by @antifa_tirana show anti-fascist and anarchist symbols, messages against the police and the system, and calls for solidarity with the protests. The account also mentions a Telegram channel as a communication space, illustrating the role of social media in spreading ideas and mobilizing activists.
These elements are consistent with a horizontal and decentralized form of organization, where communication can take place through online accounts and channels, without a single visible leader.
However, the photos do not prove that these groups have no leaders at all, that they are connected to each other, or that they coordinate protests in Albania.
They mainly document the ideological identity and the manner of public communication of the account.
Experts
Security expert, Fatjon Softa, rejected claims that there are elements of this movement in Albania.
"There are no Antifa cells in Albania. These performances have been used politically, but there is no evidence from partner agencies or ours to confirm their presence. Of course there may be influences, but there is no real or financial evidence coming from this movement," he said.
Referring to Antifa's social media profiles, Softa added: "We are in a time of hybrid warfare. Artificial Intelligence has been the main basis for the use of unfriendly foreign agencies, and fake profiles that seek to foster such a climate are part of hybrid warfare."
Security researcher Redjon Qirjazi says that Rama's claim is unlikely to prove true.
Ç’do të thotë “ANTIFA”?
Although "Antifa" is an abbreviation of the word "anti-fascist", in the US this term does not simply mean the values that in Europe are associated with anti-fascism.
Although the word "antifa" has existed in English in the general sense of "someone or something that opposes fascism" for years now, in the US this term usually refers to a specific activist movement.
This movement arose as a response to the growth of far-right groups and is known for its use of violence during demonstrations, as well as tactics similar to those associated with the so-called "black bloc" in Europe.
The term “ANTIFA” is also used in Europe, where it denotes radical left militancy and activism.
It's a term that's been around for decades, originating from "Antifaschistische Aktion" - a short-lived German communist movement during the 1930s, which was then abbreviated as "Antifa".
However, the modern European ANTIFA movement developed much later, with the term first becoming widely popular through punk culture, between the 1970s and 1980s.
History of the movement
The American newspaper "The New York Times" has published a short guide that traces the history of this term in the US.
The first American group to explicitly call itself "ANTIFA" was Rose City Antifa, based in Portland, Oregon; founded in 2007, this group has also amassed a significant online following.
However, ANTIFA is not a centralized movement and does not have a national leader.
It consists of groups that are organized at the local level, about which very little is known abroad, whose members are united by certain ideals (such as opposition to forms of authoritarianism, racism, sexism, and xenophobia), as well as by the use of specific tactics to promote them.
For example, ANTIFA groups often use violence during protests, develop strategies to confront the police, and are highly organized. ( Faktoje.al )
