An old tale with oriental motifs tells that a king entrusted a learned priest with the education of his son, the heir to the throne.

One day, while the prince was studying, the priest took his stick and hit him hard on the back, for no reason.

Surprised and hurt, the prince asked:

" Why did you hit me, hoxha? What have I done ?"

" Shut up !" the teacher replied.

" But I didn't do anything !"

" I told you, shut up !"

The prince never understood the reason for that punishment, but he never forgot it either.

Many years passed. The king died and the prince inherited the throne. One of the first things he did was to call his teacher, who was now old.

"Hoxha Effendi, I have called you to answer a question that has been bothering me for years. Why did you hit me that day, when I had done nothing?"

The priest looked at him and asked:

" You still haven't forgotten ?"

"How can I forget?"

The priest smiled slightly.

" That's exactly what I wanted to teach you. I knew that one day you would become king and have power over people, over their lives and fates, you would have soldiers, guards, and people who would carry out your orders."

I wanted you, before you ordered someone's punishment, to remember the pain you felt that day.

You haven't forgotten an unjust blow all these years. Think how long the people you will govern will remember the injustice.

"He who practices injustice may forget it the next day. He who suffers it may remember it all his life ."

This story came to mind these days, watching the events in Tirana.

Students and high school students beaten, young people handcuffed, people injured, journalists beaten while doing their duty. We have also seen police officers injured, attacked, and property destroyed.

A baton can disperse a crowd, an arrest can remove a student from the square, gas and water can clear the boulevard, but none of them erases the memory of injustice.

The government quickly forgets the violence it inflicts, but people do not easily forget the violence they suffer.

Hoxha knew that the prince would become king.

Today, no one knows what will happen to the students protesting in the streets of Tirana tomorrow, but one thing is certain: they will remember the way they were treated today.
