Two former senior officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have been accused of making false statements to lawmakers regarding their involvement in investigations involving Hunter Biden.
Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides held senior positions in the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force during the 2020 presidential election. They surrendered to authorities after warrants were issued for their arrests after being charged under federal law with making false statements related to testimony they gave in 2023 to House Judiciary Committee investigators, according to a criminal complaint filed in Washington, Bloomberg reports.
The arrests mark an escalation in the Trump administration's efforts to prosecute those involved in the investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden. Trump and his allies have criticized the way authorities handled that investigation.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the charges in a social media post. Before Trump appointed him to head the FBI, Patel had written the book Government Gangsters, in which he identified dozens of people he said were part of the so-called "deep state."
According to a statement of facts filed with the criminal complaint, Floris told congressional investigators that he was not involved in the Hunter Biden investigation and that he had no knowledge of Biden's laptop.
Prosecutors allege she had been in frequent contact with the case team for more than a year, had distributed a Senate report on Biden's business dealings in Ukraine the day the report was released, and had helped coordinate the FBI's response to media reports about the laptop in October 2020.
According to the criminal complaint, Benavides told investigators he learned the FBI had the laptop from a Wikipedia article he read while preparing for his Congressional interview.
Prosecutors say that on Oct. 16, 2020, Benavides asked the FBI's Baltimore field office for information about the laptop. Six days later, according to court documents, he attended a meeting with an FBI Criminal Investigation Division official titled "To Discuss Laptop."
US federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro also stated in a post on social media that Floris and Benavides had surrendered to authorities after arrest warrants were issued.
In a separate post, Patel said the allegations stem from an ongoing investigation into the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force, which has since been disbanded.
The criminal complaint does not indicate how Floris and Benavides will plead to the charges, and the names of the lawyers representing them have not been made public. Pirro's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment or information about the people representing the former agents.
