The United Kingdom will make up to 5 million pounds available to strengthen the fight against illegal migration and people trafficking networks in the Western Balkans.
The new aid package was announced today by the UK Minister of State for Europe, Lord Wood of Anfield, ahead of the Berlin Process Summit, which is taking place in Montenegro. The funding aims to support institutions in the region through training, British expertise and enhanced information sharing, with the aim of tackling organised crime and preventing the exploitation of migrants.
The UK Minister of State for Europe, Lord Wood of Anfield, said that criminal gangs have long exploited the region, taking advantage of vulnerable people and putting their lives at risk. He said the new funding would strengthen cooperation with international partners and Europe's security.
"Criminal gangs have exploited the Western Balkans for too long, taking advantage of vulnerable people and putting lives at risk. Together with our international partners, we are disrupting these networks. But we cannot be complacent. With new British funding, we are strengthening this effort to combat people traffickers and strengthen Europe's collective security," he said.
According to a press release, equipment and training funded by London have helped Western Balkan authorities carry out more than 100 interventions against migrants since June 2026, as well as crack down on several criminal gangs.
The new assistance will support the work of the Joint Migration Task Force (JMTF), an initiative that brings together specialists from different countries to detect, prevent and disrupt irregular migration activities. The Task Force has conducted operations in Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia.
According to Frontex data cited in the announcement, 12,528 illegal crossings were recorded on the Western Balkans route last year, compared to 144,197 in 2022.
The British government states that it will continue to work with international partners to crack down on trafficking networks and disrupt the organizers of illegal migration before they put more people at risk.
