An Albanian with a criminal record is the main suspect in the explosion that occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Kolonos neighborhood of Athens. The incident left two civilians and two police officers injured, with one of the latter suffering serious injuries to his hand and eye.

The explosion occurred when the officer, while trying to check a bag found near the elevator, accidentally pressed the remote control button inside it. Before the incident, the stairwell administrator and a resident reported to the police the presence of a bag with suspicious items, which during examinations by police officers turned out to contain heroin, a scale and a low-power homemade explosive mechanism.

According to investigations, the Albanian suspect, whose identity is not known, lives in the same building.

It is believed that after the explosion he went downstairs, saw what happened and returned to the apartment to get some personal belongings, breaking the door after being left outside in panic.

He then fled, leaving behind his cellphones. The suspect was released from prison in September after being convicted in 2008 of trafficking 100 grams of cocaine.

Investigators suspect the act is related to drug trafficking. They are investigating whether the bag was intentionally left for someone else to take or if it could have been part of a trap set by rival gangs.
