Following the violence and unrest recorded on the eve of protests against the rising cost of living, the French government is preparing an extraordinary security plan to guarantee public order during Saturday's demonstrations. The defense plan foresees the deployment of reinforced security forces, which will be directly supported by the country's most specialized units.

Deputy Interior Minister Jean-Didier Berger announced in an interview with Sud Radio that the state is making its entire operational capacity available. “The goal is to mobilize all our forces,” Berger declared, guaranteeing that authorities are taking all measures to ensure that the protests across French territory “go as smoothly as possible.”

The structure of the operational plan includes the protection of strategic facilities and rapid intervention in the most critical points. Soldiers of the “Sentinelle” troops will be stationed at fixed points such as embassies and government buildings. Meanwhile, the special units RAID, GIGN and BRI “will intervene in support, on the ground to manage the most delicate situations”, while in municipalities where there is technical possibility, the municipal police will also contribute to maintaining order.

The reinforcement of security forces comes as a direct response to the escalation of previous demonstrations. Asked by the BFMTV network, Berger confirmed that the level of police mobilization for this second wave of protests will be “20% higher than last week.” Coverage on the ground will also be supported by aerial surveillance helicopters and armored vehicles to combat riots.

While Paris prepares for protests under strict measures, other major cities are implementing strict restrictions. Following episodes of violence and looting recorded in the suburbs during the demonstrations on October 17, the Prefecture of Lyon has imposed a complete ban on all public gatherings for Saturday, October 24. In an official statement, local authorities stated that “as part of the call for demonstrations circulating and in view of the events of October 17, the prefect has taken the decision to prohibit by decree any demonstrations in the city of Lyon.”
