Thousands of students and teachers marched through the streets of the Greek capital Athens on Wednesday, demanding affordable housing for students and more state investment in education, as protests that have swept across Europe spread further.

Similar protests were taking place in several cities in Greece, including Thessaloniki in the north and the western port of Patras.

The rising cost of living, including high fuel prices, as well as anger over the state of schools and the lack of affordable housing for students, have fueled protests across Europe, with outbreaks of violence particularly in demonstrations in France, as well as in Italy and Albania.

“From Greece to France, give money for education,” read a banner during the protest in Athens. Others held cardboard signs in French that read: “Study or survive.”

Engineering student Panagiotis Moschonas, 20, criticized the conservative government for not taking measures to help students cope with the high cost of living. "They say they are supposedly helping students, with a rent subsidy of 120 euros per month. This is not even enough for half the rent and what's more, it is given at the end of the year."

Police closely monitored the march, with officers conducting random checks and bag inspections of people heading to the protest. Demonstrations in Greece often turn violent, and shops and cafes along the route lowered metal grilles to protect windows from being broken.

Teachers declared a strike for Wednesday, although some schools remained open.

"Today we are striking because this situation cannot continue for our families, with the high costs, with us struggling to make it to the end of the month, with the situation in schools worsening exponentially year after year," said teacher Ioannis Rompas.
