US Senator Elissa Slotkin has reacted to the situation in Albania, where protests against the government have been ongoing for days, demanding respect for citizens' right to protest peacefully and holding elected officials accountable for their actions.
Through a post on the social network X, Slotkin announced that in recent days he has received numerous calls from Michigan citizens, who have expressed concern about the escalation of violence in Albania and other European countries.
Slotkin underlined that the Albanian government has an obligation to respect the rule of law, protect protesters from excessive use of police force, fight corruption and respond to citizens' concerns.
In her response, she called on both sides to make all efforts to reduce tensions and find a peaceful way to resolve the situation.
"Over the past few days, I have received a number of concerned calls from Michigan residents regarding the escalating violence in Albania, among other European countries. The Albanian people have the right to peacefully protest and hold their elected officials accountable."
Similarly, the Albanian government has a duty to uphold the rule of law, protect protesters from excessive use of police force, clean up corruption, and respond to citizens' concerns. I call on both sides to do their utmost to de-escalate tensions and find a peaceful way forward,” wrote US Senator Elissa Slotkin.
