Today, the Ukrainian court ordered the detention of the Minister of Agriculture of Ukraine, Mykola Solsky, who is accused of being involved in the illegal purchase of state land worth about seven million dollars.
The judge set Solski's bail at $1.9 million, Reuters reports.
Solski denies the charges, which relate to purchases from 2017 to 2021, before becoming agriculture minister in March 2022. Solski resigned on Thursday but technically remains in office until parliament considers his resignation request.
He is the first Ukrainian minister suspected of corruption since Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi came to power. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau said the charge related to a scheme to gain ownership of state land worth $7.35 million.
As stated, the land was allegedly illegally seized from two state-owned companies and transferred to war veterans on the condition that they lease it to some private companies.
Solsky and his attorney said at Thursday's hearing that he did not benefit from such a scheme.
Solski could face up to 12 years in prison on the charge.
