Europe may die. This is the grim warning of the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. The war in Ukraine, the US pressure on Europe and the rise of Chinese economic power, could constitute a possible destruction of Europe. In a solemn speech at the Sorbonne University in Paris, Macron evoked the death of Europe as a real possibility.

"We are at an unprecedented moment of global upheaval, of accelerating major changes, and my message today is simple: our Europe is mortal, it can die, and it depends only on our choices. The main risk to European security it's the war in Ukraine. Russia must not win this war," Macron said.

Macron said Europe risks economic decline as global free trade rules are being challenged by major competitors. The European Central Bank should not only aim at inflation, but also growth and the climate, emphasized the head of Eliza. Macron called for stronger and more integrated European defense and not to become a vassal of the United States.

"We must continue to have partnerships with other countries. It means building a Europe that can show that it is never a vassal of the United States of America and that it knows how to talk with all regions of the world, with countries in development, in Africa, Latin America and not just through trade agreements, but with real strategies of balanced and reciprocal partnerships ", said the French president.

Macron said the EU should aim to become a "world leader" by 2030, with "dedicated funding strategies" in five strategic areas: artificial intelligence, quantum information, space, biotechnologies and new energies.

The French leader hopes his speech will have the same impact as a similar speech at the Sorbonne seven years ago that foreshadowed some important EU policy changes.

Since then, many things have changed, including the war in Gaza, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and disputes between China and the United States.
