The intervention for the "conservation" and "restoration" of the infamous Spaç prison, declared a cultural monument, took another turn, after the publication of the tender documents by VoxNews.

The former Social Democratic Party candidate for deputy in 2021, Benard Martini, with his firm "MARTINI KONSTRUKSION & REAL ESTATE" sh.pk, also won the tender in April 2025. The value of the procedure is around 130 thousand euros, while the published photos showed plastering and bricklaying in several buildings that served as Spaç Prison.

But what project has been approved by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage?!

VoxNews has obtained the project documents, the report and everything else about the interventions in Spaç, which document in writing, photos and sketches what interventions were required. And, as can be seen from the photos, the interventions were for concrete, plastering, painting, installing gates, building a brick wall or even interventions in toilets.

The documents explain that the prison and camp operated where the convicts, in addition to serving their sentences, were also forced to work in the mine. "This situation continued until 1990, when the prison ceased to function and was left in total abandonment after 1995 with the closure of the mine. From this year until today, the site has continued to be gradually destroyed by human and natural factors. In 2007, it was declared a second-category cultural monument and in 2015, the protected area of ??the monument was also declared, which includes the prison buildings and those of the mine administration and free workers," these documents state.

It is learned that, from the information found and the testimonies of former prisoners, it shows that the prison complex was divided into 3 main areas. The area belonging to the mine, the galleries where the work was carried out. The second area of ??residence of the convicts, where the dormitories, the infirmary, the canteen, the military command and other control buildings are located. And the third area, that of the mine administration where the free workers stayed.

The buildings are located in 2 groups, at a distance of about 150 meters from
each other. The buildings were built at different times between the 1970s and 1980s, according to the needs of the prison and the mine. They range from 1 to 5 floors and are built with brick walls.

"The main damages are those related to water infiltration as a result of damage to the waterproofing and collapse of parts of the structure. Water infiltration is very visible on the upper floors, where the presence of moisture is visible, there is detachment of the plaster, damage to the bricks with holes and corrosion of the steel wires," the documents state.

According to her, other damage present in all buildings is the removal of all doors and windows, railings, fences, etc. Removal and damage to all balcony and staircase parapets. As well as damage to a large part of the floor tiles and layers.

DOCUMENTS of the Spaç "conservation" project; Concrete,
Facsimile: The project envisaged interventions at 8 points in Spaç, from the placement of bricks, plaster, towers, gates, etc., etc.

But what works have been and should have been carried out in Spaç?! According to documents available to VoxNews, IKTK writes that the intervention will be at eight different points.

The first item was the installation of a metal gate between buildings no. 3a and no. 3b. Intervention in the fencing of the upper and lower slopes with a woven wire mesh. Also, installation of handrails on the stairs of building no. 3a, interior plastering and painting. So, it is written quite clearly “plastering and painting”!

The next items were installing a wooden gate on the second floor of building no. 3. Installing handrails or intervening in the installation of a high fence in the southern part of the building.

Interventions were required and should have been made in the enclosure of the inner courtyard of building no. 4 and another building. Also, interventions in the placement of the observation tower, the completion of the brick walls.

The installation of railings was also required, as well as interventions in filling the brick walls in buildings 3b, 5 and the ruins of the toilets. Interventions were also required in the other observation tower, or even repairing the concrete stairs.

Everything written quite clearly, where concrete, brick would be used, plaster would be applied or even paint would be applied. But, no definition of how it was before, a return to identity or even restoration or conservation as they call it. It seems that the interventions are only formal, without a proper plan, attempting to cover up the identity of a historical building, which is evidence of the suffering of thousands of people unjustly convicted, just for ideals or for agitation and propaganda. So, politically convicted!

But, if you try to intervene in such a monument, no matter how humane or painful, you should do proper studies, return it to how it was, and not hold formal tenders to give it to a firm, whose owner is a candidate for MP or even someone with criminal proceedings.

Ps. In connection with this investigation, VoxNews is publishing the complete project, technical report or even the monument's passport, to shed some light on the highly suspicious interventions in that prison. Everyone, but the most important, are those who suffered in that prison-camp-mining. Hundreds have passed away and some are living proof of the suffering they went through in Spaç!
