John D. “Jay” Rockefeller IV, former senator and member of the famous Rockefeller family, passed away on Friday at the age of 89.

Rockefeller died at his home in Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, 81, a former television host, and their four children. The family has not released any further details about the cause of death.

Jay Rockefeller was the great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller, the oil tycoon and one of the richest men in American history, as well as the grandson of Nelson Rockefeller, former governor of New York.

After graduating from Harvard University, he served two years in a national service program in rural and impoverished areas of West Virginia. He was then elected governor of that state for two terms before becoming a senator in 1984.

Rockefeller served in the U.S. Senate for three decades, until 2015. During his political career, he was particularly committed to fighting poverty, protecting the rights of coal miners, and supporting military veterans.

He also supported efforts to reform the healthcare system in the US, initially the initiative of former President Bill Clinton, which failed, and later the reform undertaken by Barack Obama.

"Supporting those most in need has been my life's mission, and I will never stop fighting to make a difference," Rockefeller declared in 2013, when he announced that he would not run for a sixth term in the Senate.
