Albanian minerals, 552 active permits in 2023. Who dominates more?

The number of mining permits remained almost unchanged during 2023, compared to the previous year. According to data from the National Agency of Natural Resources, in total last year there were 552 active mining permits, from 554 the year before.

Meanwhile, even for the year 2023, the mining activity was dominated by the extraction of chrome ore, with about 43% of active permits. According to the latest data from the National Agency of Natural Resources, there are 236 permits for the extraction of this mineral, the same number of permits as in 2022.

However, according to the data from AKBN, the production of this mineral last year marked a decrease compared to the previous year. In total, during 2023, about 921 thousand tons of chrome were produced, or about 12 thousand tons less than in 2022, when about 933 thousand tons were produced.

In second place is limestone, with 137 permits or 25% of the total, while after it is marbled limestone with 34 permits or 6.2% of the total. Practically 75% of the mining activity in Albania is made up of these 3 minerals. Meanwhile, 31 permits for nickel iron, 17 permits for the extraction of copper ore, 16 permits for sandstone, 16 permits for slate limestone and 11 permits for clay are currently active.

The rest of the mining activity in the country extends to permits of decorative limestone, alabaster gypsum, bituminous gravel sand, etc.
