Veliaj appears before the Appeals Court of Appeals today for the change of security measure

After a month in prison, Erion Veliaj will appear this Tuesday at the Special Court of Appeal, where his appeal against his prison sentence is expected to be reviewed. The hearing is expected to start at 10:00.

Appeals Judge Engert Pëllumbi will decide whether to accept Veliaj's request for release from prison, or to uphold the decision given by Judge Erion Bani.

A day earlier, Veliaj said that at Tuesday's hearing, where he is seeking his freedom, he will speak more about the case against him. He stressed that he will defend himself, his family, but also every Albanian who believes in justice.

Since February 10, the mayor of Tirana has been arrested on suspicion of having committed two criminal offenses, corruption and money laundering. In the hearing held 2 days after the arrest, on February 12, to validate the arrest warrant issued in absentia against Veliaj, the mayor, through his defense lawyers, also offered financial guarantees in exchange for his freedom, but was rejected by the court.

The investigations have revealed that Erion Veliaj, in his capacity as mayor, has set up a genuine criminal scheme in collaboration with his wife Ajola Xoxa, businessmen and non-profit organizations associated with him to benefit from large sums of money. On the other hand, Veliaj has claimed that the prosecution's accusations are unfounded and tendentious.
