Lawyer of the American studio defending Trump visits Veliaj: Detention without clear charges, contrary to the principles of the rule of law

The team of lawyers for the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, visited the detention facilities in Durrës today, one day before the appeal hearing to review his request for conditional release.

At this meeting, they were joined by Joshua Roberts, a representative of the American law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP, which is advising Veliaj.

In a statement to the media after the visit, Roberts announced that he is in Albania as an observer and stressed the importance of respecting international legal standards.

“In the United States, under the Constitution and American law, criminal charges are filed only when there is reasonable cause that a criminal offense has been committed. Also, citizens are detained before trial only if they pose a flight risk or a danger to society,” Roberts stated.

He added that "keeping a politician in detention without clear charges and without a justified risk is contrary to the principles of the rule of law and democracy."

“Tomorrow I will closely follow the appeal arguments in the case of Mayor Veliaj, ” he said.

Studio Kasowitz has served as President Trump's representative "on a wide range of litigation matters for more than 15 years," both in his businesses and during the presidential campaign.
