Old Trafford has always been one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world, but in the future it will no longer be like that: the “Red Devils” have decided to leave the “Theatre of Dreams” and have officially announced their intention to build a new 100,000-seat stadium, the largest in the United Kingdom and Europe, surpassing Wembley, which after renovation reaches 90,000 seats. The stadium will be built right next to the current location of Old Trafford, where the club has played since its inauguration in 1910. It has not yet been announced when Manchester United’s new home will be ready, but the project revealed online shows an extraordinary structure.
United's announcement
This is a project that the English club confirmed on its social networks and on its official website on Tuesday, March 11: “Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the last 115 years, but it is no longer at the level of the best sports facilities in the world.” Thus begins the club's long statement on behalf of its owner, Jim Ratcliffe, explaining the reasons and objectives for remaining at the top of footballing excellence for a long time: “By building close to the existing area, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a modern stadium that will transform the fan experience, just a few steps from our historic headquarters.”
New facility excites United fans
Photos of the new project have already gone viral and show a striking structure. The stadium will feature a spectacular mesh “tent” that will harvest energy and provide protection from the rain, creating a new public space twice the size of Trafalgar Square. The stadium will be the heart of a new sustainable area, fully pedestrianised and connected to public transport: “a small, mixed-use city of the future, which will foster growth and create a global destination that Manchester’s citizens can be proud of”.
To reach this conclusion, the club had considered several options, including preserving and redeveloping Old Trafford to turn it into a modern stadium: “The possibility of renovating Old Trafford, which was last improved in 2006, was examined by a dedicated working group,” explained the club’s CEO, Omar Berrada. Also answering fans’ questions, he added: “We have carefully analysed their conclusions, together with the opinions of thousands of fans and local residents, and have concluded that building a new stadium is the right solution for Manchester United and the surrounding community.”
The project, part of the growth process
The project presented by the club is part of the “growth program” initiated by the British government to guarantee modern infrastructure and create new jobs, which will not be lacking: with 92,000 new jobs, an area with over 17,000 new buildings around and almost 2 million additional visitors per year, Manchester United’s new stadium will serve as a major economic stimulus for Britain. Calculations predict an overall economic impact that could reach up to 9 billion euros.
One of the most important figures in Manchester United's history, Sir Alex Ferguson, has come out publicly in support of this historic choice: "Manchester United must always aim for the best in everything it does, on and off the pitch, and that includes the stadium where we play. Old Trafford holds many special memories for me, but we must be brave and seize this opportunity to build a new home, fit for the future, where new history can be written."
