Roberto Carlos arrived at Milan in 1995 for $7 million, around 10 billion lire, but at the end of the season, then-manager Roy Hodgson deemed him "tactically undisciplined" and decided he was expendable in the transfer market, having decided to play Alessandro Pistone instead.
The Brazilian had never appreciated the way the English coach used him and asked to leave. Real Madrid immediately understood the opportunity and for around 600 million pesetas (a little more than 7 billion lire at the time), transferred him to Spain.
Capello reveals details of deal
“I had just signed for Real, I was still in Milan when an agent called me and said: 'Fabio, Inter are selling Roberto Carlos'. I replied: 'It's not true, nobody is that stupid'. He insisted: 'I promise, it will only cost 500 million pesetas'. I couldn't believe it, it wasn't even expensive. I told him I would only believe him if he sent me a fax with the signed Inter documents. It was four in the afternoon, and the fax arrived at my house at eight.
"I thought it was a joke. I immediately called Lorenzo Sanz and told him to take the first flight to come, because if the news got out that they were selling him for that price, there would be a war. At 11am the next morning, everything was signed for Carlos. It was the fastest transfer in history, but an opportunity like that changes your destiny. Sometimes football is incomprehensible... because it is full of people who don't understand it."
Capello and Real Madrid, a love story in two periods
Fabio Capello was hired by Real Madrid in the summer of 1996 at the behest of president Lorenzo Sanz, who wanted to rebuild the club after a sixth-place finish the previous season. The Friulian coach ended his first Spanish experience by winning La Liga by two points ahead of Barcelona, ??but had fallen out with Sanz and announced his departure in the spring. It was later revealed that the decision was prompted by a phone call from Silvio Berlusconi: "My adventure at Real Madrid ended with a phone call from Berlusconi asking me to return to Milan. I owed him everything and I couldn't say no."
The following year, Real won the Champions League and Capello felt that success was partly his: "Part of that Champions League is my merit, because when I arrived, Real Madrid had not won anything for three years and we built a new champion team with guys like Víctor [Sánchez del Amo] or Álvaro [Benito], until his injury, and with good signings. It was not a Real Madrid with all the money it has today, so we had to make the right decisions."
The Beckham controversy
In his second stint at Real Madrid, Capello won the La Liga title again after a remarkable comeback against Barcelona. He describes the success thus: "It was a real and historic turnaround, where we overcame many problems. The end of the 'Galacticos' era? No, no, it wasn't even about 'Galacticos' or anything like that. Zidane and Figo were gone. Roberto Carlos was at the end of his career and we had the Beckham problem.
He had already signed to go to Los Angeles and the club didn't like it at all, because they had offered him a contract extension. Calderón and Mijatovic asked me not to activate him anymore. At first I convinced them, but after ten days of watching Beckham train non-stop, like no other, despite being out of the plans, I said: 'Enough. He's a Real player and he'll play'. The club didn't welcome him, but I didn't care. It was the right thing to do".
