FIFA has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be played with 48 teams in the final stage, but that's not all. As The New York Times reports, world football's top governing body is considering a revolution in the near future.
FIFA is looking to increase the number of teams participating in the World Cup to 64 in 2030. As is known, the 2030 World Cup coincides with the 100th anniversary of the competition's creation, and FIFA is doing its utmost to include as many Federations as possible.
According to German media, the FIFA Council will consider this request, which is expected to be approved and would be a great favor for small teams. The New York Times explains that the proposal was made by the president of the Uruguayan Football Federation, Ignacio Alonso.
As is known, Uruguay will be one of the organizing countries of the tournament, which will also be held in Argentina, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that this is an interesting proposal that needs to be analyzed more closely. It is no surprise that in a few months the 2030 World Cup will be confirmed with 64 teams in the final phase, which would make it XXL; with more chances for Albania and Kosovo to be part of the final phase.
