Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca has been suspended for nine months by the French Professional Football League after a confrontation with referee Benoit Millot during his team's recent 2-1 Ligue 1 victory over Brest.

The Professional League informed that Fonseca will be banned from the bench, the locker room during official meetings and from participating in any official function before, during or after matches until November 30.

Fonseca was shown a red card for threatening behaviour after a review of a potential penalty for Brest was not confirmed. The Portuguese coach later apologised for his aggressive behaviour, which prompted the team's players to intervene to defuse the situation.

The French referees' union has reacted to the latest incidents on the pitch. Following a case last week, the body said its members would exercise the right to resign if they or their families were in danger, after a match official faced a hate attack following comments made by Marseille president Pablo Longoria.
