Fonseca gets furious with the referee, risks a seven-month suspension: What
Fonseca furious with referee

The fury shown could cost coach Paulo Fonseca a few months' suspension. Despite Lyon's victory, the Portuguese coach became the protagonist of a moment of extreme tension with referee Benoît Millot, who showed him a straight red card. The former Milan coach got up nervously from the bench to protest and approached the referee's face, erupting in anger for a few seconds. Fortunately, the situation did not escalate into a physical confrontation.

Of course, his action will not go unpunished, as it is considered quite serious. Although he apologized after the match, it seems that this will not be enough to avoid a harsh punishment. On Wednesday, the Disciplinary Commission will give its verdict, and at the moment, the feeling is that Fonseca could face a seven-month suspension – a severe punishment that also comes due to several previous similar cases in France.

What happened between Fonseca and the referee?

The decision will depend on the report of referee Millot, who, according to what “L'Équipe” has reported, may not be at all tolerant. After the end of the Brest-Lyon match, he explained how the Portuguese coach lost control and approached him threateningly: “He had an even more worrying behavior, trying to punch him, even with his head. The players and his staff tried to stop him, and even the security forces intervened.”

Fonseca erupted for a claimed penalty for Brest, which was reviewed by VAR and not awarded. Fortunately, he and Millot did not come to blows, but the referee stressed that his behavior was “pure intimidation” – a factor that could lead to a longer suspension: “There was a slight contact with my nose… It was an extremely intimidating and aggressive gesture, something that is not expected from a professional coach.”

Fonseca could be suspended for seven months

Today, Fonseca will appear before the Disciplinary Commission, but the final decision is expected in a few days. Based on recent precedents in France, experts predict a suspension of at least seven months. According to French regulations, intimidation is considered any action, gesture or word that may cause fear or discomfort, while a threat is any expression or action that suggests physical harm.

A recent case is that of Marseille president Pablo Longoria, who was suspended for 15 matches (almost 6 months) for allegations against French authorities about corruption in football.

The only hope for easing Fonseca's sentence may be his apology after the match: "I'm sorry for what happened. I shouldn't have done it. Football sometimes pushes you to make rash decisions. It was a very tense match."

However, while his words may be sincere, they may not be enough to save him from a severe suspension, as the Commission is expected to issue an exemplary ruling to prevent similar cases in the future.
