The construction of the tourist port of Durrës by the company "Emaar" has sparked strong political debates, where the opposition describes it as a mega-affair, but for the former Minister of the Interior, Sandër Lleshaj, the major priority should be the large port of Albania as the most important in the region.
Lleshaj talks about moving the port, which according to him should have happened in the meantime, since where it is, it cannot perform the functions of a modern regional port. He thinks that the port should be built in another place with the vision of one of the most important ports in the region.
Sandër Lleshaj says for the newspaper "Panorama.al" that the big port should be the real strategic project of the country, as it has the capacity to radically transform Albania, while the small port of Durrës, according to him, is too small to have a strategic significance. . He makes it clear that "Durres has a lot of historical radiation and does not need to be a "Dubai of the Mediterranean".

Mr. Lleshaj, politics has recently been involved in the debate about the construction of the tourist port of Durrës by the company "Emaar". How do you consider this port project, a strategic project or a money laundering scheme!?
When we talk about the geostrategic position of Albania, we are actually talking about its maritime access, we are specifically talking about its ports, where Durrës is the main one, although still quite small to be strategic. For the metaphor of Albania as the Gate of the Balkans to become a reality, it needs to build a real GATE, one or several literal gates. This is even sanctioned in the National Security Policy of Albania, which was approved in its Assembly.
It is a first-rate national strategic priority to build an important port capacity and a corresponding corridor that connects this port with the southeastern "hinterland" of Europe. There are several countries very close to us, which can be connected to the vital space of maritime exchanges through Albania. This is one of the most important capitals that Albania potentially has in hand to develop. I emphasize that the major priority should be the big port, which has the capacity to fundamentally transform Albania.
The relocation of the port should have happened in the meantime, since where it is it cannot perform the functions of a modern regional port. I reiterate that the port should be built in another country with the vision of one of the most important ports in the region. This should be the real strategic project of Albania, as defined by the National Security Strategy. While this other project with a tourist port, hotels and residences remains only a development project.
