An air defense system was activated near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Saturday evening, according to a video posted on social media and verified by The New York Times. Residents in the capital and the northern city of Irbil heard explosions and the sound of air defenses intercepting missiles or drones attacking the area.

Acting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed the attack on the US Embassy, ??calling it a "terrorist act" carried out by "uncontrolled groups".

He stressed that targeting embassies operating in Iraq "is an act that cannot be justified or accepted under any circumstances" and ordered military and security forces to pursue those responsible and "bring them to justice."

Three Iraqi security officials told The Associated Press that a rocket hit a helicopter landing pad at the U.S. embassy compound in Baghdad. There were no reports of casualties. An embassy spokesman declined to comment.

Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, home to government offices and diplomatic missions, has been frequently targeted in the past, but this was the first reported attack there in a week since the start of Israeli and US air strikes against Tehran, which have heightened tensions in the Middle East.

The State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
