Israeli authorities believe that Mojtaba Khamenei, one of the sons of Iran's late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who replaced his father as the new supreme leader, is wounded but still alive, the Times of Israel reports.

On March 3, following Khamenei's assassination, Iran's Assembly of Experts elected his son, Mojtaba, as the new Supreme Leader, following the recommendation of the Revolutionary Guard.

The decision was made by its 88 members after the headquarters of the Iranian Assembly was hit by an Israeli-American airstrike.

US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Axios that he believes his personal involvement in choosing Iran's next leader is necessary, citing his experience with Venezuela as an example.

Trump criticized the leading candidate for succession, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of slain supreme leader Ali Khamenei, calling him "unacceptable" to Washington.

He warned that his election could lead the United States back into conflict within five years if he follows the same policies as his father.
