The Israeli army intensifies attacks in Rafah

Israeli tanks rolled into the western part of Rafah on Thursday as that part was already facing intense attacks from helicopters, drones and artillery in what residents described as one of the area's worst bombardments so far.

The assault on Rafah has so far displaced more than a million Palestinians hiding there, forcing them to settle in areas with little or no access to food, water or safe shelter. The UN has warned that more than one million people are expected to "face death or starvation by mid-July".

Joe Biden has warned that he will cut off US arms shipments if Israel continues its assault on Rafah, partly due to the lack of an adequate humanitarian plan for any civilians who would be displaced, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the war cabinet they launched the attack more than a month ago anyway.

The Biden administration has yet to slow the flow of weapons in response, arguing that Israel has yet to conduct "major operations."

However, people living in Rafah describe the ongoing fighting as devastating.
