Greece is 'burning', the Acropolis is closed after schools, temperatures reach 43 degrees Celsius

The Acropolis, Greece's most visited tourist site, was closed to the public during the hottest hours of Wednesday as the season's heat wave swept through the country, prompting school closures and health warnings.

The Ministry of Culture has stated that the archaeological site listed in UNESCO in Athens will remain closed during the peak hours of heat which are expected to reach 43C even today.

Meteorologists have noted that this is the earliest heat wave - which for Greece is classified as temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius for at least three days - in recorded history.

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has warned of a very high risk of fires in the Attica region around Athens.

Schools will remain closed in some regions of the country for today as well, while the Ministry of Labor has advised public sector employees to work from home.
