French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly called on moderate politicians from the French left and right to regroup to defeat the far-right in the upcoming national legislative elections.

A somber-looking Macron addressed French voters for the first time since his decision on Sunday to dissolve the National Assembly, France's lower house of parliament.

His move triggered snap legislative elections to be held in two rounds on June 30 and July 7, three weeks after Marine Le Pen's far-right party triumphed in the European Union Parliament vote.

"I am convinced that social democrats, radicals, greens, Christian democrats, Gaullists and beyond, many of our compatriots and political leaders who do not recognize themselves in the extremist part can work with these leaders and build a new project, a coalition of projects to govern, a coalition to act at the service of the French and for the republic," Macron said.

Macron, during a press conference in Paris, said he decided to dissolve the National Assembly because he could not ignore the new political reality after his pro-European party suffered defeat and won less than half the support of the far-right National Union. right with its leader, Jordan Bardella.

"No, I don't want to hand the keys to power to the extreme right in 2027. So I am fully responsible for having caused a new movement. First because the French asked us to do it on Sunday, when 50% of the French vote for the extreme, when you have a relative majority in the Assembly, you cannot tell them that we will continue as if nothing had happened, disrespecting them".

The decision to send voters who had just expressed their displeasure with Macron's policies to the polls was a risky move that could result in a government led by the far right for the first time since World War II.
