Donald Trump visits Congress for the first time since the 2021 riots

Donald Trump has returned to Congress to meet with Republicans in his first visit there since the riots of January 6, 2021, "BBC" reports.

The presumptive Republican candidate for the November presidential election in the US has given a message of unity, promising to "resolve" any differences within the party.

Later in the day, the former president is also scheduled to meet with an association of 200 corporate executives.

Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, said in a statement that Trump was "the instigator of an insurgency ... and returned to the scene of the crime."

The visit comes weeks after Trump's criminal conviction for falsifying business records in a New York trial. Trump was accused of paying movie actress Stormy Daniels to keep her from going public about an alleged affair, a payment he was said to have made through lawyer Michael Cohen. And then Trump compensated Cohen.

Trump arrived at the Republican building near the Capitol building on Thursday morning, passing through a small group of protesters who carried slogans including "coup failed" and "Democracy forever, Trump never."

In a brief news conference Thursday afternoon, Trump said there is "great unity" in the party and vowed to stand by Republicans, even those with whom he disagrees.

"I am for each of you. I will always be there for you... We have one thing in mind and that is our great nation again," Trump said.

Trump did not take questions, but greeted a small group of admirers.

After a meeting between Trump and House Republicans, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the former president "brought tremendous amounts of energy and enthusiasm."

"We believe we will win back the White House and the Senate and our majority in the House of Representatives will increase," Johnson said.
