Israeli soldiers fire on delegation of Arab and European diplomats, apologize "for the inconvenience"

IDF soldiers fired warning shots at a delegation of about 25 people in Jenin, Israeli media reported on Wednesday, citing Palestinian reports.

According to reports, the delegation, which consisted of diplomats from Arab and European countries, was touring the West Bank city.

The IDF spokesman says the entry was coordinated and the delegation was given an approved route due to their presence in an active combat zone.

During entry, and despite prior coordination of the route, the delegation deviated from the route and arrived in an area where they were not allowed to stay.

IDF forces fired into the air after the soldiers realized the delegation had strayed from their path. The military claimed this was to clear them from the area and that there were no damage or casualties.

In a statement, the IDF noted that it "regrets the inconvenience caused."

Army Radio reported that the IDF would apologize to members of the delegation, including diplomats from Spain and Canada.

In Brussels, EU Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas said the incident was unacceptable.

"Any threat to the lives of diplomats is unacceptable," Kallas told reporters in Brussels, as reported by AFP.

Sources from the Spanish foreign ministry condemned the shooting "strongly".

"In the group of diplomats there was a Spaniard who is fine. We are in contact with the other affected countries to coordinate together a response to what happened, which we strongly condemn," the sources said, as reported by AFP.

At the end of the event, the IDF opened an investigation into the incident. The Commander of the Civil Administration, Brigadier General Hisham Ibrahim, briefed the country's representatives on the army's findings.
