Young Italian dies fighting alongside Ukrainian forces, killed by Russian drone

A young man from Sardinia died in recent days on the Ukrainian front, where he was fighting as a volunteer in the International Legion alongside the Kiev armed forces.

He is Manuel Mameli, 24 years old, born in Cagliari on March 14, 2000. The news of his death was communicated to his family by his comrades, who also informed the Italian Embassy.

According to his comrades on the front, Mameli was killed by a Russian drone near Pokrovsk, in an area currently occupied by Russian forces. The position of the fallen soldier makes it impossible to recover his body at this time, an additional element of grief for his loved ones.

It now remains to be seen if and when it will be possible to return the 24-year-old's body to Italy and give him a dignified burial, Italian media report.
