Kurti determined for Haxhiu: Candidacy is not withdrawn, we are ready for compromises for the government

Kosovo's acting Prime Minister and leader of the Vetevendosje Movement (LVV), Albin Kurti, declared that Albulena Haxhiu's candidacy for speaker of the Kosovo Assembly is a party decision and will not be withdrawn. "Let's not play this negative game. We must respect each other's proposals and have a [Assembly] speaker based on merit," Kurti said in an interview with Radio Television of Kosovo, broadcast on Tuesday evening.

Although the nomination for speaker of parliament is the exclusive right of the election winner, LVV, Haxhiu is considered a divisive figure by two parliamentary parties: the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, which are demanding that LVV propose another name for speaker of parliament.

The process of constituting the Kosovo Assembly has stalled precisely at the election of the Speaker. MPs must elect the Speaker and five Deputy Speakers to finally constitute the new Assembly.

Only after the constitution of the Assembly can the new Government be formed. Kurti said that during the process of forming the government, he will be ready for compromises and concessions. He mentioned the minorities, as well as Fatmir Limaj's Social Democratic Initiative, as possible partners.

To those who doubt whether he has enough votes to form a government, Kurti told them: “Test me.” According to him, a governing coalition with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), minorities, and Nisma could secure up to 80 votes in the Assembly.

LDK previously rejected an invitation from Kurti for a coalition agreement.

Kurti confirmed that there have been meetings with Limaj and an increase in trust between them, but not a concrete agreement.

Kurti announced that one of Nisma's preconditions was the position of Speaker of the Assembly – a request that, according to him, has not been possible to fulfill, as Nisma has secured only three deputies in the Assembly. However, Kurti expressed his readiness for co-government with Nisma.

"Our goal is to have a new government, which is new in composition. There will undoubtedly be surprises and changes in the cabinet," he said.
