Serbia borrows 19 billion euros to buy 12 Rafale jets from France

Serbia has agreed on a €1.92 billion loan with several French banks and financial institutions to pay for 12 Rafale fighter jets and related products and services.

This is stated in the proposal for the Law on Confirmation of the Loan Agreement, on the website of the Serbian Parliament. According to the Law on Public Debt, the Serbian Parliament must confirm the state's borrowing.

The Serbian government, through the Ministry of Defense, concluded a purchase agreement with Dassault Aviation on August 29, 2024.

The total purchase price of the equipment to be delivered and the services to be performed by the seller under the commercial contract amounts to 2.74 billion euros, foreign media report.

The payment was agreed so that 30 percent of the contracted price would be paid in advance (823,500,000 euros), which Serbia has already paid from its own funds.

The first installment was paid in the amount of 15 percent of the total contracted price (411,750,000 euros). The second installment of Ava's payment was in the same amount, as can be seen from the document published on the website of the Serbian Parliament.

First and second performance payments are also foreseen. These payments amount to 25 percent of the total contracted price (or 686,250,000 euros). These will be paid using funds from the loan agreement.
