A mafia assassination has rocked the Calabria region of Italy, where the wife of Damiano Pepe , 64, considered by investigators to be one of the most important figures in organized crime in the Sibaritide area, was shot dead. Pepe himself was seriously injured.

Italian media write that the incident occurred around midnight, in the Lattughelle area, in the territory of the municipality of Cassano all'Ionio, in the province of Cosenza.

According to preliminary information, the perpetrators of the attack acted near Pepe's apartment. His wife,  Silvana Sibarelli , 60, lost her life, while the 64-year-old was seriously injured. 

Officers from the Cassano all'Ionio unit of the Carabinieri arrived at the scene and began investigations to clarify the circumstances of the attack and identify the perpetrators.

Damiano Pepe's health condition is reported to be serious. Initially, he was transported to the hospital in Corigliano Rossano, to be later transferred to Cosenza.

According to reports, the 64-year-old underwent a complicated surgical procedure.

Investigators are working to reconstruct the dynamics of the attack and determine its motives. For now, the perpetrators and the full circumstances of the assassination remain under investigation.
