A new and highly contagious variant of COVID-19, which has caused a significant increase in hospitalizations in China and other Asian countries, is now also present in the United States.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the new variant, provisionally called “NB,” was first detected in late March and early April among international travelers arriving at airports in California, Washington, Virginia and New York. Cases have since been confirmed in Ohio, Rhode Island and Hawaii.

At the moment, cases are still too few to create a clear picture of the spread, but experts warn that this variant is spreading at higher rates than previous variants, which was clearly seen in China and then in regions such as Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

In Hong Kong, health authorities report the highest levels of infections in a year.

The number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations has increased significantly over the past month, which has increased concern that the new variant may be more aggressive to the respiratory tract.
