The village of Blatten in the Swiss canton of Valais has been partially destroyed after a large part of the glacier collapsed.
Although the village was evacuated days ago for fear of the Birch Glacier collapsing, one person has been reported missing.
Local authorities have requested support from the Swiss army's disaster relief unit and members of the Swiss government are en route to the scene.
Three hundred residents had to leave their homes on May 19th after geologists monitoring the area warned that the glacier appeared unstable.
The Swiss government has already promised to provide financial resources to ensure that residents can stay, if not in the village itself, then at least in the surrounding area.
Raphaël Mayoraz, head of the regional office for natural hazards, warned that further evacuations in areas near Blatten may be necessary.
Footage showed a large section of the Birch Glacier collapsing at around 15:30.
As the avalanche descended, a deafening roar was heard and a huge cloud of dust rose over the valley.
The latest report on the state of Switzerland's glaciers suggests they could disappear within a century if global temperatures cannot be kept within a five-degree Celsius increase.
