US Senator Lindsey Graham said on Wednesday that 72 US senators support a bill that would impose "overwhelming" sanctions on Russia - and high tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil and gas - if President Vladimir Putin refuses to engage in serious peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
"The goal is to help the president," said Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and a key ally of President Donald Trump.
The bill includes 500% tariffs on imports from countries that buy oil, natural gas, petroleum products or uranium from Russia. It would also ban American citizens from buying Russian securities.
The bill has already passed the critical threshold of 60 co-sponsors, with support from leaders of both parties. This overwhelming support also ensures the bill's passage in the Senate and would provide enough support to override a potential veto by President Trump.
“He said he was frustrated. I want negotiations to end the war, in a fair and just manner. I think Trump is the right person to do that, but these sanctions represent the Senate’s position that we see Russia as the primary culprit,” Graham said.
Graham has warned Putin against underestimating Trump, calling the bill “a tool in President Trump’s toolbox.”
"When President Trump believes we have reached an impasse, then expect action," he added.
According to him, Putin will ultimately be faced with a choice: negotiate or watch the Russian economy "destroy".
