A new agreement between the United States and Ukraine paves the way for Washington to gain access to Ukraine's natural resources while creating a new investment mechanism aimed at providing long-term support to Kiev.
According to the BBC, although President Donald Trump has exerted severe pressure on Kiev at times, he has ultimately managed to get what he wanted, but not on the terms he had proposed.
On the other hand, Ukraine has given the US access to its precious natural reserves, without receiving the security guarantees that President Volodymyr Zelensky sought.
The BBC has analyzed the draft agreement and has identified 7 most important points:
1. No obligation to return money to the US
Donald Trump had previously demanded that Ukraine return $350 billion, which he said was given by the US during the war. President Zelensky had flatly rejected this request.
The new agreement does not contain any clause for the return of these funds.
Trump has presented this as a victory, saying that the US will benefit more in the long term from this agreement than from the billions spent during the Biden administration.
2. Tougher US rhetoric towards Russia
The agreement was accompanied by an unprecedentedly harsh tone towards Moscow from the Trump administration.
The US Treasury Department called it "a full-scale invasion" by Russia and stressed that no state or entity that financially supports the Kremlin's war machine will benefit from the reconstruction of Ukraine.
3. Oil and gas are also in play, not just minerals
Although the main focus is on Ukraine's mineral resources, the agreement also includes projects for oil, gas and related infrastructure.
All natural resources remain in the ownership of Ukraine, but the US receives shared access, a significant compromise on Kiev's part, compared to the initial plans.
4. The agreement does not conflict with EU aspirations
Ukraine has had concerns that the agreement with the US could jeopardize its efforts to join the European Union.
But the final version of the document clarifies that there is no conflict between them.
On the contrary, it is emphasized that the US will be ready to renegotiate in the event of new obligations imposed on Ukraine by the EU, while encouraging investment and technology transfer from Europe itself.
5. Profits will be reinvested in Ukraine for a decade
For the first ten years of the investment fund's operation, all profits will be reinvested in the Ukrainian economy. Only after this period is it envisaged that the benefits will be shared between the parties.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said that " this is an opportunity for the US to participate in reconstruction and be rewarded for its support for Ukraine."
6. Military aid with new conditions
The continuation of American military aid to Ukraine was conditioned on the signing of this agreement.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said the pact provides for new military assistance, including defense systems.
This is a major shift from Trump's initial position, which had signaled an intention to cut military aid.
7. Lack of binding guarantees, the US may withdraw
Although the agreement includes major economic projects, it does not provide clear security guarantees for Ukraine.
Trump's reluctance to make military commitments comparable to Biden's continues.
US support still remains dependent on the will of the White House, leaving a significant amount of uncertainty for Ukraine's most important ally.
