The coldest Christmas in decades is expected in the US, with temperatures

The powerful Arctic winter storm has put more than 135 million people under extreme cold weather warnings over the weekend. The danger zone stretches from coast to coast and reaches as far south as the US-Mexico border and Florida.

Major airports have canceled thousands of flights as the cold storm continues to intensify. Forecasters say the cold snap could bring the US's iciest Christmas in decades.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said temperatures of -45C were possible by the end of this week in parts of the US. They warned that even in major metro areas, such as the city of Des Moines, freezing will be a major risk.

Frostbite is caused when blood circulation is reduced, often to the extremities such as the nose and cheeks or the fingers and toes. Lack of warm blood can lead to freezing and tearing of tissues.

"This is not like a snow day when you were a kid, this is serious," President Joe Biden said at a White House briefing.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency pending the storm. Florida is predicted to see its coldest Christmas in 30 years.

Snow and strong winds are expected to cause damage and power outages in the Midwest and Canada.
