French President Emmanuel Macron said that European countries should be more decisive in NATO and reduce their dependence on the United States.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Macron, speaking to reporters on the French presidential plane after returning from an international summit in Amman, Jordan, said he "does not see an effort to develop European defense as an alternative to NATO."

He said a stronger Europe would allow the continent to become more autonomous within a military alliance, operating within NATO, with NATO, but not dependent on NATO.

"The alliance is not something I should rely on. It's something I have to choose, something I work with," Macron said, adding that it is necessary to rethink strategic autonomy.

According to him, Europe should gain greater autonomy in terms of technology and defense capabilities, including the US.

His remarks followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's meeting with US President Joe Biden in Washington and a speech to Congress on Wednesday.

Earlier, Biden announced a $1.85 billion military aid package for Ukraine.
