Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Crooka announced that he will resign after the heavy defeat his party suffered in the European elections.

"From tomorrow I will be prime minister in resignation", declared De Croo, unable to hold back tears as the polling stations closed.

After congratulating the right-wing Flemish parties, he added: "I take my responsibilities, from tomorrow I will be prime minister in resignation and I will concentrate on managing the current situation."

The center-right party, the Flemish Open Liberals and Democrats, saw its numbers drop as it received just 5.7% of the vote, according to polls.
