What has happened in France in the space of a few hours is unusual. The country will go to early elections, as President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly in a press release after the closing of the ballot boxes for the European elections.

Macron's party has been "crushed" in the elections by the extreme right, led by his historical rival Marine Le Pen, and the head of the Elysée for the first time since 1997 decides to dissolve Parliament.

"This is not a good result for the parties that defend Europe. Therefore, I cannot act as if nothing had happened", said the head of state in the speech after the historic defeat.

The first round will be held on June 30, the second on July 7.

The turnout is estimated at 52.5% of the electorate and is the largest turnout in European elections in the last 30 years in France.

Polls published a little while ago in the French media show that Marine Le Pen's National Front list, led by Jordan Bardella, has come out on top with more than 30% of the vote. Never has this force managed to get such a high number of votes as this.

The "Renaissance" party of President Emmanuel Macron, led by Valérie Hayer, came second with 15.2% of the vote.

While the Socialists, under the leadership of Raphaël Glucksmann, managed to get 14%. Eric Zemmour's far-right Reconquest got 5.5%, while the left-wing LFI got 8.3%.

It looks like the Greens will only get to 5.2% – just short of the 5% needed to get into the European Parliament. Participation in France was approximately 51%, slightly higher than 2019's 50.12%.

Speaking to supporters, National Front list leader Jordan Bardella said the French had given a "decision without appeal" giving his party more than 30% of the vote. This is more than double what President Macron's party managed to achieve.

"We welcome this decision with humility and seriousness. Our fellow French citizens have expressed a desire for change. This clear message to European leaders shows the willingness of the French to see Europe change course. A wind of hope is blowing over France and it is only the beginning. The president cannot remain deaf to the message sent tonight by the French people," said Bardella.

He also said that President Macron should dissolve the government and call a general election.
