Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has voted in the hope of overturning a majority of the European Parliament.

Meloni, of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, is one of Europe's most watched leaders, presenting herself as a bridge between the centre-right and its conservative camp.

Polls suggest groups around the political center-right, centre-left, greens and Liberals- will be able to form another majority in the next EU parliament, which decides on laws governing policy in the bloc.

Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar called on tens of thousands of supporters to vote for his party in the European Parliament elections on Sunday.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban faces one of the toughest challenges to his 14-year rule.

Opposition rallies have drawn huge turnout in some rural Fidesz strongholds, and he has said his lawmakers will join the European People's Party.

Orban leads in the polls, but Magyar is regarded as an explosion on Hungary's political scene just four months ago. Meanwhile in Berlin, there was protest against the right-wing policy represented by the Alternative for Germany.

Although afd continues well in most national polls, support for it has declined due to ties to China and Russia and revelations that senior party members were participating in talks to expel non-ethnic Germans.
