Five people, four of Albanian nationality and one of Tunisian nationality, all aged between 30 and 50, were arrested on March 19 for international drug trafficking in Italy.

The investigation has uncovered the activity of the criminal group and has led to the imposition of prison pre-trial measures for the crime of association for the purpose of illegal drug trafficking, with the aggravating circumstance of the availability of weapons.

In total, 19 people are under investigation, including an Italian courier, around 90 years old.

According to police, the five arrested are suspected of importing drugs from the Netherlands. Between April and November 2020, the group is suspected of bringing 41.5 kilograms of cocaine, 76.5 kilograms of marijuana and 280 kilograms of hashish into Italy.

The value of these narcotics shipments, according to police estimates, could reach up to 5 million euros.

According to Italian media, the five arrested, including an uncle and nephew of Albanian origin, were identified and arrested in various cities in Spain and Italy.

inquiry

The investigative activity was reportedly long and complex. One of the main difficulties was the use of encrypted communications between members of the criminal group, who used the Sky Ecc communication network.

Investigations were carried out between April and November 2020, but the police were unable to decipher the criminal groups' messages. But in 2021, police forces in Belgium, the Netherlands and France managed to 'hack' the Sky Ecc system.

After that, the Bologna Prosecutor General's Office was able to obtain the key to decrypt the messages and begin analyzing them.

Another difficulty has been the linking of information, as the only elements available to investigators were the messages, videos and photos exchanged by the group's members. This has required careful analysis to reconstruct the group's identities and activities.

Arrests and searches

In the end, investigators cracked down on an international drug trafficking ring operating to and from Italy, based in Bologna. Drugs, mainly cocaine, were imported into Bologna by couriers who hid them inside trucks and then sold at retail.

Most of the money earned from trafficking ended up in Albania, where it was used to purchase drugs in bulk.

Italian and Spanish authorities arrested five members of the criminal group, who were taken into custody. During the investigation, searches were carried out in the cities of Modena, Ferrara and Frosinone, where 15 thousand euros in cash, about 9 mm cartridges, two cars and materials for drug packaging were seized.

Gang members

The leader of the criminal group was identified as a man in his forties, of Albanian origin, who during the investigation had been living in the province of Bologna. He was the one who managed the entire activity, determining the imports, the quality of the drugs, and organizing the couriers and the transportation of the money to Albania.

After his escape to the province of Barcelona, ??command of the group passed into the hands of his nephew, also Albanian and residing in Bologna.

Another person involved is a very elderly man, almost ninety years old, Italian and with no criminal record. This individual was used as a “suspect subject” for transporting drugs.

He has not been arrested, but is under investigation. Two people ended up in a Bologna prison: the nephew of the group's leader and another of Tunisian nationality.
