Yesterday, May 30, a protest was held by the residents of Zvernec, who oppose the fencing of the Pishe-Poro Nartë area by the construction company " Zvernec South Adriatic Development ".
In footage obtained by VoxNews , protesters were confronted with violence by the construction site's private guards.
The first tensions began after one of the protesters retreated inside the cordon and was then punched by private guards. He was also dragged several kilometers, losing consciousness.
Kostaq Konomi, the mayor of Zvërnec who was present at the protest, told BIRN that the protester was hit before losing consciousness and that after his release, he was spitting blood.
"They shot him in the throat and he lost consciousness. He was spitting blood in the hospital," Konomi said.
In the official announcement, the Vlora Police reported that one of the protesters forcibly entered the construction site and was accompanied by private security employees.
"Under these circumstances, one of the protesters, citizen ES, was forcibly taken inside the construction site's perimeter and was escorted by employees of the private security company to the area designated for guards," the police announced.
What is currently happening in Zvërnec?
Over the past few days, all attention has been on the space between the Narta lagoon and the coastal area of Zvërnec.
The area is surrounded by wire, behind which lies a construction site, with heavy trucks loaded with inert materials and other vehicles operating in the field.
This is an area where the construction of a large tourist project by foreign investors is reported.
Under these conditions, dozens of citizens and civil society activists, PPNEA, AOS and the group 'Save Vlorën', protested in front of the perimeter fence on May 16, denouncing the damage to the protected area.
According to activists and residents, access to the area has been restricted and the territory is surrounded by barbed wire, while there is a lack of transparency regarding the entities carrying out the works and the nature of the projects under development.
They also point out the lack of information boards and institutional communication with the community. Protesters warn that the project, announced as a tourist development, could turn into a massive urban transformation that risks the disappearance of the natural habitat.
Who is building?
The works are being carried out by the company "Zvërnec South Adriatic Development", which has obtained two development permits for the construction of a massive tourist resort during 2025, but these permits have not yet been made public.
The project is related to an investment previously presented in international media and envisages the construction of thousands of accommodation units in an area that separates the Narta lagoon from the Adriatic Sea.
