A few days ago, tangerines sprayed with the insecticide periphos methyl, otherwise known by the trade name acticllic, were sold in Tirana supermarkets.

If we read the label, this agricultural preparation is prohibited from being used for spraying in agricultural fields, it is used to disinfect food and legume warehouses or stores, and despite this, tangerines sprayed with this drug were sold in Albania.

The AKU showed its inability to stop the marketing of the product, on the other hand, even though 5 days have passed, the AKU and the MB have still not revealed the traceability of whether this was an Albanian or imported product, and how much of the mandarins with periphos methyl have reached the tables of the citizens of Tirana, and beyond.

"Pimiphos methyl is an insecticide of the phosphogranic group which was used years ago to combat insects in greenhouse conditions, but is no longer used and is only applied to stored products," said UBT lecturer Shpend Shahini.

It was the ISUV laboratory analyses that gave the alert that the mandarins had been sprayed with this drug. If we read the product label, we also understand the reason why the European community has removed it from the list of agricultural preparations that fight insects on trees. The dangers that come from this poison are numerous, precisely in the bottles of the drug.

Perimiphos methyl

May cause respiratory tract irritation.

May cause drowsiness.

Suspected of causing cancer

Causes damage to central nervous system organs

This medicine should not have been in the mandarins and the fault for this lies not only with the farmer, but also with the specialist from the agriculture department who should be in the field to inform the farmer.

"Based on the analysis you are saying, we think that farmers have used it under vegetation conditions, so this is where the role of pharmacists and agricultural experts comes in, who should be close to farmers to recommend them," said Shahini.

So far, the AKU and the Ministry of Agriculture have not made any reaction to the dangerous tangerine scandal. This case raises serious concerns about the control of the food chain and calls into question food safety and consumer protection./ TCH
